Communicating With the Bereaved

Purpose: Learn what to say and what to do when caring for someone who is grieving, and strategies for communicating with the bereaved.
Audience: This lesson is intended for healthcare professionals and others who may interact with or provide services to the bereaved.
Objectives: As a result of completing this lesson, the learner will be able to

  • Define compassionate silence.

  • Identify two strategies for communicating with the bereaved.


Memory-Making and Ritual

Purpose: Learn the importance of keepsakes, memorials, and ritual for the bereaved when one who is loved dies.
Audience: This lesson is intended for healthcare professionals and others who may interact with or provide services to the bereaved.
Objectives: As a result of completing this lesson, the learner will be able to

  • List three ways the bereaved can memorialize their loved one who has died.

  • Identify how mementos create relationship between the survivor and the deceased.

  • Explain co-creation of ritual. 


Guided Participation: A Method of Teaching and Learning

Purpose: Learn what sets Guided Participation apart from other methods of teaching and learning, and how it supports relationship-based care and practice.
Audience: This lesson is intended for healthcare professionals and others who may interact with or provide services to the bereaved.
Objectives: As a result of completing this lesson, the learner will be able to

  • Define participatory learning.

  • List the three elements of Guided Participation.
